2023 BMW XM
Exterior
The BMW XM is one of the more distinctive vehicles on the road, with a unique boxy exterior. One major negative is that while it looks like this could result in more space and thus better practicality, the XM only offers 18 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk. This is unimpressive compared other SUVS such as the the much more sporty Porsche Cayenne Turbo, which starts at a similiar price and contains 26 cubic feet. There are a plethora of customization options, such as color, wheel size, trim, and more. Overall, the design is quite impractical and unnattractive, especially at the massive price tag the XM starts for. However, in my opinion, it seems boring designs are quite synonymous with BMW, even in the M division. While the performance of the cars can be imposing, the designs seem too similiar to the base versions and thus reduce the special feeling one should have when paying such a high premium.
Interior
The interior of the XM is spacious and airy, with plenty of legroom and headroom in both the front and the rear. The seats are supportive and comfortable, with soft leather upholstery and adjustable lumbar support for added comfort. The cabin is well-made and quiet, with plenty of insulation to block out exterior noise. The front seats offer massaging functions and all are heated and ventilated. The dashboard is simple and intuitive, with a large central display and all the necessary controls within easy reach. The infotainment has Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. The system is easy to use, with a clear and intuitive interface. The XM also has a range of convenience features, such as a panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control. The storage compartments are well-designed and spacious, with plenty of space for small items. There are also numerous charging ports located throughout the cabin, including wireless charging for compatible devices. Overall, the interior of the BMW XM is stylish and luxurious, with plenty of space and a range of convenience features. The materials used are high-quality and the craftsmanship is top-notch. The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use, and the driver assistance features provide peace of mind. The cabin is well-insulated and quiet, and the storage compartments are spacious and convenient.
Performance
When it comes to performance, the XM lies in the shadow in comparison to some of its competitors in the same price range. The XM offers a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. This is outputted by a 4.4 liter V8 engine and an electric motor. While this is a respectable output, it is still somewhat modest when compared to other luxury-performance SUVs in the same price range. The XM's engine is certainly capable, but it lacks the power and torque of other cars in its class, and thus the performance numbers are quite unexceptional. It can go from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 155 MPH or 168 with the additional M Driver's Package. The aforementioned Cayenne Turbo S can go from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and has a 183 mph. It is also considerably lighter due to a lack of an electric motor. The XM also has somewhat lackluster handling dynamics. The steering is generally precise, but it lacks the sharpness and feedback of other cars in the same price range. Overall, the BMW XM has decent performance, but is somewhat lacking when compared to other cars in its price range. The engine is powerful, but it lacks the power of and thrill other similar vehicles can offer.
Verdict
I believe BMW has disappointed a lot of fans with the release of this car. I would rather have an Audi RSQ8 or Porsche Cayenne Turbo S any day of the week. If I wanted something with more room and 7 seats instead of 5, I would take a Mercedes-AMG GLS63s. These cars all offer better performance, similar levels of luxury. Similiar or even cheaper price tags, and a better driver experience. However, BMW promises to release a new version of this car in the near future with more horsepower. Hopefully it lives up to the expectations the current XM could not fulfill.
